I am very happy to announce that Jason Scott will be editing the Two Hands Project!

It’s been a long time since there have been any updates and I apologize. Starting this project I greatly underestimated the time and skill needed for the editing process. Thus I am very honored that Jason Scott has offered his time and skills free of charge. This means that the movie will be made and all your trust and hardwork will pay off.

Our friend Jordan Bunker has started a second hackerspace documentary that I think will be awesome! It looks beautiful and he has a great team of people who know a lot about film making. I’m proud to say that I worked with him on the Two Hands Project and am glad that there is more documentation of what I think is a movement that is so very important for so many reasons. Thoughts about education, business, the importance of community, hacking, making, and passion seekers fill these spaces, though each is different you get the feeling of a global community changing the world for the better. I hope that both these movies bring about more awareness and encourage people to consider the ideas they represent more seriously.

Here is a quote about the “Good” parts of the Two Hands Projects taken from Jasons blog.

But the good: EVERYBODY is in the fuckin’ film. As far as the linked hackerspaces.org crowd goes, they really went all over, and while I’m sure there’s plenty of spaces they missed, the geographic spread is breathtaking; I’ve seen footage from Atlanta, Boston, DC, Toronto, Buffalo, NYC, Rochester, Washington DC, Baltimore, Ann Arbor, Seattle, Los Angeles… and many of these cities contain footage from multiple spaces nearby. They didn’t shy away from walking around locations while people did stuff, filmed a bunch of environmental/surrounding area shots (although often with crazy shaky-cam), and didn’t let too many people slink away in the shadows while the cameras were coming through. And the questions are wonderful – as one of the interviewees I can say they really did a great job pulling out stories and statements from their subjects, and folks give out some real fantastic answers.

The raw footage is a real rich tapestry of human beings and their spaces. There’s faces of people I myself recognize from years of hacker conventions, who I never got a chance to meet. I guess “I edited you in a film” will be a good conversation starter.

I’ll post more updates about hackerspaces I’m involved with and the movie as they come about. Currently you can find a string of images from the video transcription here.

Thanks again Jason. YTMND.
+Bilal

We had the honor of having the Two Hands Project crew come and visit us at the Willoughby and Baltic Sunday night. By “honor” I mean that we had Bilal flying around on our space on a rolling stool (literally in a super man pose). Oh, and if he tries to talk you into a “full body” handshake, just go with it. Between that and the conversations on 6 foot wide blinking tacos, they fit right in.

After looking at our tools, and printing some things on Skidoo we all settled down and spoke a bit about hackerspaces. I could tell that they have been speaking with many people, because their questions were generally very good (or the questions were about fish). It was really interesting to hear about how there is a common theme with all of the spaces, but how each approach it from very different angles; the basic theme being shared space and shared knowledge. I’m greatly anticipating what comes out of all this.

The thing that I personally love about visiting other hacker spaces, is that you inevitably meet really cool people doing really cool stuff. People you end up hanging out with till 2 in the morning, which you feel invigorated from and wish you didn’t need to sleep. Bilal, Paul, and Jordan seemed to be living on that energy. It is an enviable position, and they are really cool people working on a really cool project. We wish them the best in their travels, and welcome them back at any time.

Who are you?

What motivates you, what do you do, what does it mean to you and how does all of it fit into your life? I’m talking about your hacking, your building, your making, your science/art*, your anything that motivates and compels you to create. The act of creation of anything is a fundamental tap to that which makes us human, each act of creation is an exploration of possibility, an actualization of our imagination and a practical utilization of our skills. When we create, we are sublime and we are awesome!

I want your details. Not as in “Hey, baby, gimme your digits!”, but who you are and what you make. While I was at Pumping Station One in Chicago with the Two Hands Project, I collected profiles of the incredible people I met there, and I did the same at i3 Detroit. However, I don’t feel as though I can post hacker/maker/awesome people profiles from just those 2 places as it would exclude all of those around the country and world that are also awesome. So send me an email, tell me who you are and what you make and what you’re passionate about, and where you are, even include a mugshot if you want and I will post them here (may be edited for length) to increase the sharing of awesomeness in the world!

Email Profiles in Awesomeness to Alexander(DOT)Honkala(AT)GMAIL(DOT)COM.

*Is there even a difference?
